Trainings for A.B. 703 / Rule 5.664 Compliance in CA (Los Angeles)

Beginning July 1, 2016, attorneys seeking appointment in delinquency cases must be able to show that they have met minimum training requirements specified under California Rules of Court, rule 5.664, or have demonstrated competence based on sufficient recent experience. (Welf. & Inst. Code § 634.3, added by A.B. 703, Stats. 2015). Some courts may be using a Judicial Council form to assist in documenting compliance with the rule.

The Pacific Juvenile Defender Center will present two regional trainings designed to fulfill the requirements of AB 703 and Rule 5.664. The trainings will provide information every juvenile delinquency practitioner should know whether they are just starting, or have been in practice for a long time.

Presenters will cover delinquency law and practice, including adolescent development and working with adolescents, ethical duties of counsel, competency, capacity, detention advocacy, adjudication strategies, cross-over youth, non-wardship resolutions, dispositional and postdispositional advocacy, transfer cases, appellate duties, immigration issues, issues in representing LGBTQ youth, and reducing racial and ethnic disparities.

Participants will receive 8 MCLE credits, including one hour of ethics and one hour of eliminating bias in the legal profession. The Berkeley training will be recorded and made available for purchase on line.

Registration Fee: The early bird registration fee (includes breakfast, lunch and materials) is $150, now available through May 13th. After May 13th, the registration fee is $175.
